How to Join a Discord Server | PC & Mobile

Discord has changed the world of gaming and networking, allowing users to create their own private servers to build free communities, have engaging text discussions and jump on easy-to-use voice calls.

How do you join a Discord server? To join a Discord server, you will need to scroll to the bottom of your server-bar to the left of the screen, select the green arrow, enter in your desired server’s custom join-code and click “Join Server”. This applies to both PC and mobile users.

These are the following steps to join a Discord server:

  1. Open the Discord application on your PC, mobile device or web browser.
  2. Scroll to the bottom of your server-bar located to the far left side of the window.
  3. Click or press on the gray circle button with a green plus symbol located in the center.
  4. A white popup will show up. Select the gray “Join a Server” button situated at the bottom of the popup.
  5. Fill in either your custom Discord link or Discord code into the “Invite Link” bar.
  6. Select the “Join Server” button located at the button-right of the popup.

Now, these are the general steps, but there are easier and quicker ways to join a server. In this article, we will go through image guides for both PC and mobile with both the method we mentioned above and the easier method.

The Quickest and Simplest Method of Joining a Discord Server

If the Discord code you received is a link, you can follow the following steps to join a Discord server:

  1. Click on the Discord link if it’s a hyperlink. If not, copy that link and paste it into your preferred browser.
  2. A new window will pop up. Select the purple “Accept Invite” button in the middle of the new popup window.
  3. The server will be located at the top of your server-bar located on the left of your window. Click on the server icon and you have successfully joined the server.

To help you follow these instructions better, I further broke down each of these steps to further help you follow along.

1. Click on the Discord link if it’s a hyperlink. If not, copy that link and paste it into your preferred browser.

Computer

To join a Discord server, you must already have a Discord server join link. For example, you can find the Esport How Discord join link from the contact page (which is being used for the images below).

When you find it, depending on where it’s written, it may be hyperlinked. You know if it’s hyperlinked if it’s underlined and/or has a different color from the other texts (as shown below).

Assuming it’s not hyperlinked, you can simply copy it and paste it into your address bar (as shown in the image below).

Mobile

Before you start, I recommend you download the Discord app as you will be required to have the Discord app to use Discord on mobile. Once downloaded, be sure to also log in before proceeding with this procedure.

The same rules apply to PC. There must be a Discord join link. The image below is on the contact page of this site. If hyperlinked, simply click it as shown below.

If it’s not hyperlinked, simply copy and paste it into your browser’s search bar.

2. A new window will pop up. Select the purple “Accept Invite” button in the middle of the new popup window.

Computer

Once you click or search it, it’ll populate a new page on the domain “discord.gg”. Assuming you don’t have the discord computer application, you will see a window pop-up as you see in the image below.

Click on the “Accept Invite” button to become a member of the server.

Once you do so, the window should change to the Discord normal interface and you will be a member of the server you joined.

If you already have the application, instead you will see a page like this (below). Simply ignore this page and go to your Discord application.

After you open up your Discord application, you should see it’s all dark excluding a gray popup in the middle with your desired server. If you don’t see this, simply repeat step 1 and it should pop up the next time.

With this popup, click the blue-ish purple-ish button located at the bottom.

Mobile

If you are using an Apple device, you will automatically skip the first part of this step (but scroll below the first image to follow the 2nd part of this step).

Once you click or search the link, if you are using Android you will get a little select-application annotation at the bottom of the screen.

You will want to select the “Discord” application with the gray logo as seen below, and select either “Just Once” or “Always”. You may as well do “Always” as you will always want to select Discord as the application anyway.

Once you complete that, you will now see basically what I’m showing in the image below. There’s a big blue join button, just click that and be officially on the server.

3. The server will be located at the top of your server-bar located on the left of your window. Click on the server icon and you have successfully joined the server.

Computer

Finally, you have joined this server. This last step isn’t mandatory, but in case you are having trouble looking at the server you found, go to your Discord window (if you don’t have the PC application), and located the server icon at the top of your server bar located at the left of the window.

These are the exact same steps for the application, with the difference only being slight changes in the UI.

Mobile

For mobile users, the moment you join the server it should populate your screen already. Therefore this step isn’t necessary. But in case you somehow don’t see the server, all you need to do is put your finger on the left side of the screen and drag it towards the right.

After you do that, you should see a bar open up on the left side of the screen. You can also open this bar by pressing the 3 line icon located at the top left of the application.

Once the bar is open, the top server will be the server you just joined. It will have the same image you saw when we pressed accept on the server join page.

If you don’t see it for whatever reason, repeat steps 1 and 2.

Standard Discord Server Joining Method

This method isn’t as fast as the other. But if you run into issues following the quick method, this standard procedure should be smooth sailing for the most part.

That said, if you still are running into issues, I included the 3 most common errors people run into when joining a Discord server and how to curb them at the bottom of this article.

To rehash it, this is the best method for joining a Discord server:

With that out of the way, let’s get started.

1. Open the Discord application on your PC, mobile device or web browser.

Step 1 is to open up the Discord application on any platform that you are using.

For the image example below, I opened by Window’s search bar and searched up “Discord”.

If you don’t have the Discord application, you can use the browser to open up Discord.

Lastly, mobile users need to find the application on their phone. If you don’t have it, it’s a free download on both iOS and Android.

2. Scroll to the bottom of your server-bar located to the far left side of the window.

Now with Discord open, regardless of your phone, web app or pc app, you will need to scroll to the end of your server-bar located to the left of your screen (indicated in the image below).

For mobile users who haven’t joined a server yet, you will see the server bar displayed on the side. If you are already in a server or you don’t see the server-bar (image below), simply while having the Discord app open, put your finger on the left side of the screen and drag it to the right to reveal the server-bar.

For most people reading this article for the first time, you won’t need to actually scroll down. Instead, just look at the server-bar and you need to locate this gray circle with a green arrow inside (image below).

This is typically situated at the end of the server-bar, but since your server bar isn’t full, the end would be near the top left side of your screen (image below).

3. Click or press on the gray circle button with a green plus symbol located in the center.

Now that you are at the bottom of the server bar, you will see this gray circle with a green plus symbol within it (image directly below).

I placed another image below with a red drawn circle to indicate where this is located. You will need to left-click or tap on it (depending on if you are on PC or mobile respectively).

4. A white popup will show up. Select the gray “Join a Server” button situated at the bottom of the popup.

As you can see in the image below, your screen should have a white box pop up and the outside around it should have darkened (on mobile, the popup is all you see, the image at the end of this step).

If you don’t see this, be sure to be properly clicking on (or taping) the proper button (make sure it has the green plus inside and make sure you clicked it properly).

In the image above, I circled a larger gray button with the text “Join a Server”, you want to click that which should change the shape and context of the popup will change.

If you are using mobile, the popup will look like this:

At the very bottom, it says “Join a friend on Discord”, you will need to click that button to proceed.

5. Fill in either your custom Discord link or Discord code into the “Invite Link” bar.

Now you want to use the join code or link you received from your friend or online to paste it in the fill-in field, circled in the image below.

The code should look like any of the following formats:

Any of those would work. If you code you have doesn’t look like any of those formats (not the exact code contents), you may not have a legitimate join code.

All those codes above would lead you to join the same server (in this case, it’ll be the Esport How Discord server).

6. Select the “Join Server” button located at the button-right of the popup.

Once the code is pasted, click the Join Server button, shown in the image below.

And ta-da!! You have officially joined a Discord server.

If you receive an error at this point, I recommend you check the common issues section of this article as it’s likely possible your forgetting cap sensitivity, the code has expired or you are already on the server.

Common Issues When Joining a Discord Server

This section deals with specific problems you may run into when trying to join a Discord server.

Scroll below, see which problem specifically applies to you and my answer should smoothen things out.

I Wrote the Code But It’s Saying It’s Incorrect Even Though I’m Certain It’s Not

It’s important to note that the codes are cap-sensitive, so if you are trying to type out the code, make sure you have all the needed caps. Also, if you are typing it yourself, be sure to not confuse similar letters like “1” (one) and “l” (L) or o (letter O) 0 (number zero).

If you are copying it, be sure to copy the entire code. You may have missed a character. If you are certain you copied it fully, try taking the standard approach for joining the server and only paste the code, not the full URL.

It’s also possible you are in the max number of servers. Although if you are, it’ll tell you upon you attempting to join and the link would still work for the popup annotation.

If none of the above, it’ll likely any of the following issues listed below.

Whenever I Press or Search the Join Link, It Says It’s Expired

Discord server join links can be set to expire (they are set as such by default) or be revoked from being functional by a server admin. If it says the code is expired, one of the two actions above transpired therefore the code you are using now won’t work.

Instead, you will need to get a new code from someone who has permission to generate codes from the Discord server. If you can’t get a new code, nothing you can do with the old code will let you into the server or even tell you which server the code came from.

The Discord Join Code I Have Isn’t a Link

By default, Discord will always generate server Join Links and never generate standalone codes. However, the link’s ending aspect can be turned into a code to be used as a Join Code instead.

For example, the original link could be “https://discord.gg/A29VNNKkrC”, but the specific code that can be extracted from it is “A29VNNKkrC”.

Therefore, there are two things you can do. Firstly, if you wanted to go the quick method of joining a discord server, you can insert the code back into a link. Simply paste the code in your address bar after the following line: “https://discord.gg/”. Press enter and if the code is legit, it’ll work as a functional link.

Second, if your code isn’t a link, you will need to follow the longer standard Discord joining procedure listed above and in step 5 paste that code instead of a link. This will also work, neither method is better or worst (although this one takes slightly longer).

This all assumes you seriously have a Join Code. Chances are someone just sent you a random series of numbers and letters that mean nothing and aren’t related to Discord. If you run into issues, this may be the case.

And if that is the case, you won’t be able to do anything with that code.

Whenever I Try to Join a Server, The Discord App Pops Up Without Asking Me to Join

If this occurs, the only explanation is that your currently logged-in account (assuming you are already logged in) is already a member of that Discord server.

Scroll through your current Discord servers and try to identify the logo of the server you are looking to join.

If you may have accidentally joined it really recently, it will be the top server on the server-bar.
