Esports scholarships work similarly in many ways to sports scholarships. Many schools participate in leagues or tournaments in various games. Performing well in these events will increase school recognition and often have other rewards. To help attract high-quality players, many schools offer scholarships to existing and future students.
Many of today’s top esports prospects are young kids who have spent thousands of hours perfecting their craft. This creates the perfect opportunity for schools to scout and recruit up-and-coming talent.
Like sports scholarships, landing a position on a high-ranking school team can be a long and competitive process. These schools are often offering highly competitive scholarships and are looking for the best of the best that there is to offer. These schools often have an extensive list of coaches and supporting staff committed to the roster. Today, many schools scout using recruitment events and checking players’ recruitment profiles online.

To create a recruitment profile, you must make an account on the Stay Plugged In website as a player and fill out your profile information.

What Happens at Recruitment Events?
Recruitment events are a place where students have the opportunity to show off their skills to several recruiters in different formats. There are many other hosts of recruitment events around North America.

The Three Main Event Formats
The three main event formats in order of smallest to largest are the Weeklies, the Showcase Series, and the Carry2College events.
Weeklies
Weeklies offer players consistent practice against high-level players by hosting free entry $100 tournaments every week. Players can use these events to improve their skills and find teammates to participate in future events.
Showcase Series
The Showcase Series is a recruiting tournament co-hosted by the website and a recruiting partner. Students play virtually in front of recruiters for a chance to impress. Recruiting hosts can engage with players directly and deepen their connection through this event.
Carry2College
Carry2College is the largest recruiting event being hosted four times a year. The event lasts three days online with a heavy presence from recruiters all around the country. The event presents a range of opportunities inside and outside of the games, like educational panels, job fairs, and information panels for parents. There are one on one sessions with recruiters available, as well as discussions around career opportunities within the industry.
How do I Apply for an Esports Scholarship at a High-Ranking School?
There are a couple of different ways that top-ranking schools recruit for their esports teams. Some schools send recruiters or coaches to major tournaments to scout potential pick-ups.
Schools may localize their search by hosting public tryouts for high school students. Keeping an eye out for these tryouts is an option to get noticed. Attending public esports events as a player is another option. A more active approach would be to contact coaches directly and fill out a recruitment form.
Alternatively, you can directly follow and message schools through your recruitment profiles.
